The Fall From The Mountain of God

The Origin of Angels, part 3

E HAVE ESTABLISHED, that there once must have existed "proto-angels", that is, angels who were neither fallen or elect (see part 2). But how was it in the beginning, in the childhood kingdom of the angels? Can we learn something about that?

Since the only angel who's original state we know something about, is the Adversary, former "Lucifer", we must examine his pre-history again. It is said about him in Ezek. 28, that he was "perfect", or blameless, in his ways. He had been "set (or ordained) ... upon the holy mountain of God", as a cherub, and was blameless, "till iniquity was found" in him.

Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.
Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.
Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.
All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more. (Ez. 28:11-19)

THIS TELLS US QUITE A LOT. To be able to be blameless, one also must have the opportunity to fail. The proto-angel thus had been successful in his life, so far. Perhaps he had been tested by God, like humans are during their earthly lives. He had managed this test, in contrast to Adam and Eve. Therefore he had been exalted, and set upon the Mountain of God, been dressed in a cherubine glory-body, and been given responsibility as king over (and with) a large crowd of companion angels, like him, glorified.

If this is right so far, we notice a difference here, in relation to human conditions. Lucifer experienced the glorification without the need of Christ's atonement. His transition to the heavenlies came as a reward for his own successful walk, and not by grace. Therefore, he was vulnerable in his new existence. He could get proud, and he was. His state of glory was not of that perfect kind that will be the Bride of Christ's. Angels can, or once could, fall from their glorified state, but the Scripture says nothing about the gloryfied state of the Bride of Christ as being associated with uncertainty. Jesus has given us a perfect salvation, and thanks and praise for that.

But of the Angels, and the heavenly bodies, the Scripture says:

Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly (Job 4:18)
Lo, in His holy ones He putteth no credence, And the heavens have not been pure in His eyes. (Job 15:15, YL)
Behold even to the moon, and it shineth not; yea, the stars are not pure in his sight. (Job 25:5)

So this means that there is a certain difference between the conditions of angels and of humans. Angels are not perfect, but humans will be "perfected for ever" (Hebr. 10:14). Although it is highly possible that the elect angels also will benefit from the resurrection of Christ, so that they too, when Christ comes, or perhaps after the final judgement and the new creation, will rise further upwards in the glory degrees. The letter to the Ephesians gives a hint of that:

Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: (Eph. 1:8-10)

So also the word about angels desiring to look into the mystery of the atonement. They too, long for the eternal perfection:

Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into. (1 Peter 1:12)

In so being, it may also be that the elect angels are those who realized that it wasn't enough being successful and splendid, to be perfect and glorified into the image of God. They noticed, in their self-acquired glory, that it wasn't sufficient. They still felt a dependency to God and his Son, who then lived in his pre-existence. Then when they learned that Jesus would be born to Earth to be the whole creation's atonement sacrifice, they rejoiced. They looked forward to Christ's atonement, and received, like the saints of the Old Testament, intro-active partition in the sacrifice, that is, in advance. God had chosen them from the beginning. Therefore, they too worship "the Lamb that was slain", along with the crowd of saved humans, when we encounter them in the future of the Apocalypse:

Woodcut illustration by Julius Schnoor von Carolsfeld from "Das Buch der Bücher in Bilden."

And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;
Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.
And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.
And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever. (Rev. 5:11-14)

The other glorified sons of God, on the other hand, those who rejoiced over their own beauty, power and self-control, began to be filled with iniquity. They followed their king Lucifer, and when he finally was cast down from the mountain of God, he dragged them along in his fall.

THUS THIS IS about a primary stage in the history of angels. First, they lived through their proto-state, when they were neither glorified nor fallen. This was an existence that probably was very similar to the one we now live in. They were another human kind, on another planet. At that time there was no devil who tempted them, and perhaps therefore they were more successful than the earthly humans. Many of these proto-angels managed to reach the glory-state and were moved up to their heaven, where they were set on a "holy mountain of God", that is, they came to a glorified planet (perhaps the same we are going to). But there, a new sifting began. Some fell, and others stayed faithful to God.

Those angels who descended to Earth in Noah's days probably were a later group of angels, a "second harvest" of the fall. They represent a later and different kind of fall. They were never cast out of Heaven, but left it by their own choise. They were hesitant angels, who did not know quite what they wanted.

Those who were cast out due to iniquity, had first been "destroyed", that is, their glory-bodies aged and died slowly, and so their spirits ultimately were cast out from the God-mountain.*

* I wrote that about ten years ago. I'm not sure if I agree with that detail today. Those angels may still have bodies.

The latter troop still had their bodies when they came to earth, and therefore could mate with humans and have children with them. (A glory-body can appear in both earthly and heavenly guise, as we see from several examples in Scripture.) But when the Flood came, these hesitant sons of God were imprisoned in Tartarus, so presumably their bodies drowned, together with humanity. Away from their natural habitat on the Godmountain, they had begun to age and lose their glory, as when Adam and Eve began to "die", after the fall in the garden. (Psalm 82 may contain a prophetic hint of that.)

A UNIVERSAL ATONEMENT

HY I DO THIS amplification, is because it is important to point out, that the incarnation and atonement that Jesus made for us here on earth, can only have been made once in the history of the Universe. If some gloryfication has taken place earlier, in other worlds, it has been without the blood of Jesus, and then it cannot have been of that complete kind that we will experience. And this seems to be in accord, as the angels, according to the Bible, actually can fall into sin, inspite of having glory bodies. Not even the elect angels are fully perfect, even though they are faithful to God. They are glorified, but their gloryfying is not yet perfected.

We are not gloryfied, but when we become gloryfied, we will be perfected. And those who are asleep in Christ already are perfected in their spirits. It would be awful to imagine a heaven where there are still possibilities to fall into sin. I don't think Jesus has died for something so fragile and uncertain.

But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. (1 Cor. 13:10)
For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. (Hebr. 10:14)
But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect (Hebr. 12:22-23)

But the first estate of the angels were like that. They could fall into sin in their heaven. For what reason we don't know, but one could think of them as living in a kind of angelic "Old Covenant", in a precursor to something better to come.

It can hardly be that God failed with an earlier creation, and then gradually succeeded better and better. No, there is only one creation, and in this both proto-angels and glorified angels, as well as humans, are a part. There is an advanced, great, predestined plan in all of this, but it might not be discerned in full as long as we are on earth.

PROBABLY IT WAS THIS great plan of redemption, this mysterious universal atonement, that the apostle Paul had in mind, when he wrote these words in the letters to the Ephesians and Colossians:

Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; (Eph. 1:9-10)

...He raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. (Eph. 1:20-23)

Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord (Eph. 3:8-11)

For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. (Col. 1:16-20)

For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power (Col. 2:9-10)

(Also see Luke 2:9-15, Dan. 12, 1 Cor. 15:24-28)

HERE IT SAYS, among other things, that Jesus is the head not only for his church, but for all the princes and powers of the heavenly world. That is, also for the angels. Could you say then, that this means that the angels also belong to the body of Christ? Well, maybe if you think of his universal body.

It also speaks of a divine atonement, through the blood of Jesus, with all that is on earth and in heaven. Atonement in heaven? Apparently the chosen angels and their princes will partake in Christ's atonement. These Bible passages seems to confirm what is said above. The extent of it is colossal, and demands consideration, before one can comprehend or gather it. (The Universe is big.) Thus it can't be done in this article, but perhaps in a forthcoming, if God is willing.

LAMENTATION OVER LUCIFER

HE FOLLOWING IS A PROPHECY about the dispensation of the gentiles, and the beginning of the Millennial kingdom, when Lucifer/Satan will be imprisoned in Tartaros for a thousand years. First we see how the Lord has mercy on Israel. That is the New Testament age, when the Father sends John the baptist, Jesus and the Holy Spirit to the faithful remnant of Israel, the disciples of Christ. Then we see how "strangers" joins them; that is when the gentiles are reached by the apostolic revival and mission. From Isaiah 14:

For the LORD will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land: and the strangers shall be joined with them, and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob. (Isa. 14:1)

After that there's a gap in history, and so the regathering of the Jewish people is mentioned, now in the last days. That was done through the UN, after the second world war. We also see how, during the Millennial reign, the remains of the nations who previously plagued them, now become their servants, that is, they become captives of Christ and gladly share their lives in service of the restored Jerusalem:

And the people shall take them, and bring them to their place: and the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of the LORD for servants and handmaids: and they shall take them captives, whose captives they were; and they shall rule over their oppressors. (Isa. 14:2)

THEN FOLLOWS the lamentation over the angelic prince, who through the ages has plagued God's chosen people, and all peoples of the world. In Isaiah's days, Babylon was the political and religious center of the world, and therefore it is to the prince of Babylon the prophecy is aimed:

And it shall come to pass in the day that the LORD shall give thee rest from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard bondage wherein thou wast made to serve,
That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!
The LORD hath broken the staff of the wicked, and the sceptre of the rulers.
He who smote the people in wrath with a continual stroke, he that ruled the nations in anger, is persecuted, and none hindereth.
The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet: they break forth into singing.
Yea, the fir trees rejoice at thee, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us.
Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.
All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us?
Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee. (Isa. 14:3-11)

First, the dethroned prince must defile past the human realm of the dead, where all those he ruled over will see him come, in chains, and deprived of all his glory, going down to the abyss of angels.

And so, a brief history, as in a funeral speech. The prophecy describes how Lucifer fell, and then attempted to return to the mountain of God, where he used to be so successful:

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;
That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?
All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house.
But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet.
Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned. (Isa. 14:12-20)

Notice that Lucifer is now called a "man" by his former subjects. It shows that he too is of the "angelic humanity", i. e. without his angelic covering and glory, his appearance is that of a man, just as we see with other angels in Scripture.

THE ANGELIC TRIBUTE TO THE LAMB

UT LET US RETURN to the praise and victory celebration of the elect angels and humans in heaven. It is in this choir we, who believe in and feel the need for Jesus as the Lamb of God, belong:
